What is ETIAS?
ETIAS stands for the European Travel Information and Authorization System. It's a new electronic system created by the European Union to strengthen border security and streamline the European entry process for travellers from countries that currently don't require a visa for short stays, such as the United States and Canada. ETIAS will require eligible travellers to obtain an online authorization before travelling to any Schengen Area country. It aims to enhance security by pre-travel screening for potential security risks or irregularities.
What is the ESTA of the United States of America?
ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization. It's an automated system, which has been in operation since 2008, that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). The VWP allows citizens of certain countries to travel to the US for tourism, business, or transit purposes for 90 days or less without obtaining a traditional visa. However, travellers must obtain approval through ESTA before boarding a carrier to travel to the US by air or sea. ESTA collects biographic information and answers eligibility questions to determine whether an individual can travel to the United States under the VWP. It enhances security by identifying individuals who may pose a risk before they board an aircraft or vessel bound for the US.
